Interview and Negotiate Like a Lawyer

Interview and Negotiate Like a LawyerInterview and Negotiate Like a LawyerFollow these tips from lawyers to convince a hiring manager to offer you the job (and the salary) you want.Lawyers are trained not only to argue a position but persuade judges, juries and even adversaries to try to binnensee things their ways. What can they teach job seekers about convincing a hiring manager to give them the job (and the money) theyre after?Ladders asked two attorneys, who coach other lawyers on how to interview and negotiate, for tips and tricks.Stephen E. Seckler, president of Seckler Legal Consulting in Newton, Mass., spent 15 years as a legal recruiter. He now runs his own business helping law firms manage their businesses more effectively.Veteran litigator Victoria Pynchon works as a mediator at ADR Services, helping other lawyers negotiate their way out of sticky conflicts.Dont burn the interviewerThe first thing to remember when taking advice from a lawyer on how to persuade and negotiate is that your end goal is very different from a lawyers end game, Pynchon said. When lawyers argue, their goals are to win, not generally to meet the other party halfway or form a lasting bond, she said. You negotiate based on positions Im right, and youre wrong, and here are 10,000 reasons why youre wrong and I should get the biggest share of the pie, she said.Thats not a bad approach in the courtroom or across the negotiating table from an opponent after the lines have been drawn and the first shots fired in a dispute, she said. Its not so good in a job interview when what youre trying to do is establish a relationship, Seckler agreed.A salary negotiation isnt a conflict to be resolved, Pynchon said. There is a lot of push and pull, but what youre building is a relationship which you both hope will last a long time, not a scorched-earth business deal.Still, there is more back-and-forth in a good negotiation than most Americans are comfortable with.Pynchons other tips on negotiatingM ake the first offer. This goes counter to every guide to salary negotiations, but lawyers know that the person who names a number first sets the range for the discussion. Even if the other side disagrees, everything else is judged by how much higher or lower it is than that first number. Thats why they call it an anchor, Pynchon said. Its a cognitive issue we cant help it. Any number you introduce early in the negotiation will exert a pull on your negotiating partner.Dont negotiate with yourself. One of the things they did teach us at law school about negotiating is, dont bargain against yourself, she said. If you say you want $190,000 and the other person says thats well beyond the range, dont come back and say, How about $150,000? Wait for their response dont bargain yourself down.Justify and rationalize. Always give a reason, preferably a good one, for what youre asking for. If you dont have a good reason, give a bad one. In studies of human behavior, people offering a ridiculou s reason for asking a favor have nearly the same success rate as those offering logical reasons, Pynchon said. Offering no reason drops your success rate by more than a third. A good reason in this case would be a favorable comparison with what others in your position make, or a quantification of your contributions in your last job that demonstrate your real value.Be generous, long before you need to be. Reciprocity is one of the strongest human motivational factors, Pynchon said. Its why waiters put mints on the plate with your bill a little gift for which youll feel obligated.Hiring managers will feel the same way if they have a reason to feel obligated to you for the answers or support youve given members of his or her team through a social-networking site, for recommending job candidates or business opportunities anything that is clearly generous and selfless that affects hiring managers or someone who works with them.Be real.It has to be genuine, though, and you have to do it all the time, Pynchon said. People dont like it when youre clearly out to gain something. It makes them feel hustled.Make small concessions.Research shows that peoples satisfaction with the outcome of a negotiation is primarily tied to the number of concessions the other side makes, Pynchon said. Set your expectations high and make small concessions, or offer to do more work for the same money, to make people happy. Youre trying to build something durable, so it helps if both people come out feeling as if theyve won something.

Special Issue of ASME Journal Features Papers from Annual Grand Challenge Competition A new special issue of the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, which was published in February 2016, features a series of papers from the sixth and final Grand Challenge Competition to Predict In Vivo Knee Loads. The competition, which launched in 2010, provided researchers with the opportunity to predict in vivo knee contact forces, as measured by instrumented knee replacements, using musculoskeletal modeling methods but without having access to the experimental contact force measurements. Unlike the five previous competitions, which were held during the ASME Summer Bioengineering Conference, the final competition was organized through the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering. The shift to a journal-based competition eliminated the time and financial c osts associated with traveling to a conference and made it easier for researchers from around the world to participate, which encouraged broader participation. The special issue features papers from the four teams that completed this years competition, including the competitions winning research paper, Intra-Articular Knee Contact Force Estimation During Walking Using Force-Reaction Elements and Subject-Specific Joint Model, by Yihwan Jun, Cong-Bo Phan, and Seungbum Koo from Chung-Ang University in Korea. The competition was organized by B.J. The Payoffs of Rewarding Employees for Being Healthy

The Payoffs of Rewarding Employees for Being HealthyThe Payoffs of Rewarding Employees for Being HealthyThe Payoffs of Rewarding Employees for Being Healthy DeZubeBack in college, did you have a favorite chair in the student lounge? It may well have come from KI, a Wisconsin-based contract furniture manufacturer whose products are erasing the traditional design divides between home, workplace, and school interiors. The employee-owned company has also blurred the lines between healthcare and the workplace wellness through an innovative program that rewards employees for being healthy or working towards better health.KIs CEO, Dick Resch (above) is the architect of its health and wellness program. At 78 years of age, Dick is an avid cyclist. Since the 1980s his goal has been keeping insurance premiums below the national average. The result is a workplace wellness program that reflects the companys Furnishing Knowledge byline.Boosting Healthy BehaviorsRather than demand that workers be he althy, KI offers financial incentives and workplace supports to boost healthy behaviors that are integrated into the company culture.Lunchtime work outs in the company gym are accepted healthy salad bar options are available in the cafeteria, as is advice from on-site health coaches a KI wellness team plans fun fitness events. The biggest one we did welches a Biggest Loser contest with teams, says KI Benefit Manager Jodi McWilliams. We used a plant scale and every week they went out as a team and weighed themselves. A popular month-long fitness bingo competition encouraged healthy behaviors like drinking five glasses of water a day. Each year, theres an annual walking day where employees wear fitness clothes to work. One year we did a scavenger hunt walking the trails at lunch, McWilliams says.KI also offers financial rewards like a $250 race reimbursement for charitable runs, walks, bike races, or triathlons, and a $100 stay-healthy benefit that pays for gym memberships.Greater Heal th, Greater SavingsThe largest financial rewards come via KIs health insurance plan, which includes a company-funded health savings account (HSA), plus shared premiums. KI calculates the employees share of the premium based on a health assessment measuring tobacco use, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI), plus laboratory blood tests for cholesterol and glucose. Each of KIs 1,400 employees gets a score from the screening with points added for healthy outcomes, like low blood pressure, and subtracted for health risks, like tobacco use. The more points an employee receives, the less they pay for health insurance. A single employee with a high score on the health assessment can get the gold (best) insurance plan for as little as $2 a paycheck plus a $3,000 annual deductible.Focus onHealth, Not PunishmentBecause the goal of KIs wellness program is improved health, employees have opportunities to boost their scores and lower their insurance premiums. Overweight? KI will spring for th e first three months of a Weight Watchers program and add back any points schwefellost for a high BMI. Fail to finish, however, and you foot the bill yourself.By far, the biggest point losses accrue to employees who smoke or chew tobacco. If youre a tobacco user, you score a negative 60 points on a scale of 100, and non-tobacco users get 20 points, so if youre a tobacco user, youve lost 80 points, McWilliams explains. Anyone who goes through the tobacco cessation program gets their points reinstated each year regardless of whether they continue to use tobacco. The same philosophy applies to all the health conditions uncovered by the wellness assessment. No one forces anyone to do anything other than attending an activity. It isnt results-based. By just completing one of the three-month health and wellness programs, they can better themselves for the year,McWilliams says.Perhaps the sweetest benefit is that all the money in anHSAgoes with employees who retire or move to a new company. That might be a nice little nest egg good news for retirees whose healthy lifestyle might lead to a longer life and a longer retirement to pay for.

Why a Creative Resume Design Can Hurt Your Job Search

Why a Creative Resume Design Can Hurt Your Job SearchWhy a Creative Resume Design Can Hurt Your Job SearchExplained Why We Removed Your Charts and ImagesThere are so many nuances when it comes to writing an effective resume for todays market that its hard for anyone other than a trained professional writer to keep track. Between the evolving needs of employers and their growing reliance on recruitment technology, resume writing has become both an art and a science. In this series, our goal is to explain some of the common changes resume writers make and why they are in your best interest. Why we remove the images and charts from your resumeIf youre working in a creative field or you just have a passion for graphic plan it can be tempting to embellish your resume with embedded images, fancy charts, and other plan elements to make it pop. However, there are a few good reasons why your professional resume writer opted for a sleek, yet simpler design.Employers arent fans of fancy resume formatsA creative resume design can often work against rather than in your favor. When TopResume surveyed nearly 400 recruiters and HR professionals about the resume mistakes they considered to be deal-breakers, format and/or design is too elaborate was among the top 10 resume offenses.Recruiters spend, on average, less than 10 seconds skimming a resume during their initial review they dont want to waste time hunting for key pieces of information. Unfortunately, a creative resume design often changes the whole layout of the document, making it a challenge for recruiters to quickly find the information they care most about.Images distract from what really matters your qualificationsWhile fun design elements may catch a recruiters eye, they can also be distracting. The best way to impress employers is by making it easy for them to identify your qualifications and understand your career story in a short amount of time. Dont distract them with images or charts that draw attention awa y from your measurable achievements.Embedded images arent ATS-friendlyIn addition, resumes that contain embedded charts or images dont play nicely with applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software most employers use to scan resumes and eliminate the least qualified candidates for a role. In fact, these design elements are often unreadable by the ATS and will appear missing from your application once it passes through the ATS.When it comes to your resume format, less is moreProfessional resume writers are trained to use clean resume designs that favor white space, making it easy for the reader to quickly skim your information and understand your career story. The more creative you get with your resume design, the more likely recruiters will be forced to hunt for the information they care about and the more likely they will skip over your application altogether.Save the fancy graphs and other bells-and-whistles for your personal website (if applicable).Recommended ReadingHow to Cu stomize Your Resume for a Specific Job ApplicationWhy a Simple Resume Layout is More SuccessfulHow to Set the Stage for a Successful Job Search

Electrician Job Interview Questions & Tips for Answers

Electrician Job Interview Questions & Tips for Answers Electrician Job Interview Questions & Tips for Answers When you’re interviewing for a job as an electrician, it’s important to demonstrate both technical knowledge and general professionalism. By the time you get to the interview stage, you’ll no doubt have the skills you need to land the job. In order to interview for a position as an electrician, you must have completed the necessary professional training and technical education. You will have likely trained to one of three levels: apprentice, journeyman, or master electrician. While your job application and resume reflect your experience, you need to be prepared to discuss your qualifications in depth during the interview process. To prepare, review and practice common electrician interview questions. It’s important to be able to demonstrate that you have the technical knowledge necessary to do the job. Then, when you’re done with those, make sure that you’re able to answer general interview questions that often come up. Your goal is not only to show that you can do the job, but that you’re a hard worker and a good employee. Common Electrician Interview Questions Some interview questions are common for a person applying for an electrician job. If this is your first job, run your answers by a seasoned professional who can help craft your responses. Some of the questions are more generalized: Why did you become an electrician? How many years have you been working in the industry? How and where did you receive your training? What was a time when you had a problem you could not figure out and you had to find a solution on your own?Could you describe some recent projects you have worked on, in detail? What does a fuse or breaker do? What are the differences between the two?Can you describe the electrical systems you have worked on and are most familiar with?Do you specialize in any specific areas of electrical work? What do you do to protect yourself from electrical accidents or injuries? How do you protect coworkers from electrical accidents or injuries? If you saw a coworker making a mistake, how would you handle it? Technical Questions Often during the process, if you have made it past the initial inquiries, the interviewer will throw in some technical questions. Winging it through these types of questions is difficult, so be prepared: If you were in a room with three light switches and the room next door had three lightbulbs, how would you find out which switches controlled which bulbs if you could only go in the next room once? What does PPE stand for? How important is safety on the job? What is CSA approval? What does 14-2 mean? Make sure that you can answer these types of questions with confidence, using your answers to highlight what sets you apart as a candidate. Remember that how you answer interview questions can be just as important as the answers themselves. A Note on Dress Code As a trained electrician, you know that working conditions for electricians vary depending on your specialization. For most electricians, the work is physically demanding. Occasionally you must work in a tight space, having to bend, squat, or kneel to make connections in awkward locations. Industrial electricians may find themselves in the heat, dust, and noise of an industrial plant. Your typical work attire likely suits your everyday work, but it wont be appropriate for an interview. You want to present yourself as the professional you are. The typical advice for trade job interview attire is to go business casual, so leave the jeans and work boots at home. For men, business casual might mean a nice pair of slacks, a buttoned shirt, and clean, polished shoes. For women, slacks and a professional business top are advisable. This is not a time for a formal suit, but do present yourself as organized and with attention to detail. Your interviewer will notice and assume that you put the same care into your work. What kinds of general interview questions should you expect? The most common questions include: Why should we hire you?  Best answersWhat is your greatest strength?  Best answersWhat is your greatest weakness?  Best answersHow do you handle stress?  Best answersDescribe a challenge at work and how you overcame it.  Best answers Remember when you answer these questions that your goal is to present yourself as a calm, competent, informed professional who will make the right decisions under pressure and leave clients with a good impression of the company.

Including Extracurricular Activities in Your Resume

Including Extracurricular Activities in Your Resume Including Extracurricular Activities in Your Resume Students or recent graduates applying for entry-level positions or internships often are asked about their extracurricular activities. They often are asked follow-up questions about why they liked those activities or what they learned from them. Employers ask these questions because they want to know a bit about your personality to see if you will fit in with the company culture, if you are a well-rounded person with interests outside of work, and what skills and abilities you have that relate to the job. While extracurricular activities are meant to be fun, they also are a way to develop valued by employers. By giving honest answers that loosely connect back to the requirements of the job, you can show employers who you are and why you are a good hire. What Are Extracurriculars? Extracurriculars are any activities or interests you have outside of required classes. Traditional examples of extracurriculars are clubs or sports such as student government, debate, hockey, and many more. Societies also are extracurriculars. These include fraternities and sororities, as well as national honors societies and other membership organizations. Another example of an extracurricular is volunteer work. For instance, perhaps you work at a food pantry or help run the ticket booth at an annual fundraiser. However, there are informal extracurriculars as well. Perhaps you love guitar and play with friends once or twice a month. Maybe you are training for a marathon, or you love gardening. These less official interests can count as extracurriculars, especially if you are not in any clubs or societies. How to Answer Questions When going into an interview, be prepared to talk about your extracurricular activities and how they have helped you to grow as a person and how they have helped you develop valuable professional skills. Follow these tips: Be Honest First and foremost, don’t lie or exaggerate your role. If you say you were the captain of your school’s baseball team when you werent, employers have ways of finding out the truth. When they do, dont expect a job offer. Employers also might remember your extracurriculars and ask you about them in the future. If employers later discover you lied during the hiring process, that gives them legitimate cause to terminate your employment or rescind a job offer. Explain Your Role Don’t give brief answers such as, I play the flute. Instead, explain your role within a club or society, or explain how you practice your skill or hobby. For example, you might say. “I enjoy playing the flute and am the second chair in my college’s symphony orchestra. We rehearse once a week and have two concerts every semester.” This information helps employers understand whether your activity involves leadership or teamwork, and how much time you devote to it. Explain What You Learned or How You Developed After explaining your role in your extracurriculars, give a brief statement about some of the skills or abilities you developed through the activities. For example, explain that being a copy editor for your school newspaper taught you how to pay attention to details and how to notice and address even the smallest errors and inconsistencies. Connect It to the Job When you think about the skills you have learned or improved upon through your extracurriculars, focus on those that are related to the job you are seeking. Before an interview, look back at the job listing and check out the required skills and abilities and think about whether your extracurriculars have helped you develop any of them. The connection does not have to be perfect, but if it has even a general relationship to a required skill or experience, its worth addressing. For example, if you are applying for a job that involves teamwork, you might mention that you play soccer or another team sport. If you are applying for a teaching job, you might mention that you volunteer at a local tutoring center for elementary school children. Sample Answers Its important to tailor your answers to your own specific experiences, but when preparing for an interview, its sometimes helpful to have an example of how questions about extracurriculars can be addressed. Use these sample answers as starting points for how you can structure your own answers to questions about how extracurricular activities make you a better job candidate. Resident Assistant At college, I was a resident assistant for two semesters and held a leadership position in student government. As an RA, I was responsible for the care and co-management of a building of more than students. I gained valuable skills planning events, being the leader of a floor, and working as a team to effectively manage resident issues. I developed a lot of those same skills in student government. Our governing board managed events for our senior class of 300 students. I took a leadership role in event planning for our school dances and seasonal events, all of which had about an 85 percent attendance rate. Drama Club Member I was a member of my schools drama club for all four years of college. I found that as I improved my acting skills, I also gained better communication skills, which has been helpful in my current front-desk job. I can speak clearly and confidently to all people, both on the phone and in person. I also took a number of improv courses, which not only improved my communication but also taught me to be more adaptable and quick on my feet. Music Program Accomplishments I have played the piano for 12 years. I chose a school with a wonderful music program, and I continued to receive one-on-one instruction from some highly respected pianists. I also volunteered at our college’s preschool and developed and ran a highly successful music workshop for 15 preschool students. As an elementary school teacher, I hope to incorporate music into my classroom as much as possible. School Athletics I have been involved in school athletics for almost my whole school career. I was a member of my high schools varsity soccer team, even as a freshman. I was lucky enough to get a scholarship to my university because of my soccer abilities. Being a member of many teams while growing up, I learned the value of being a good team member and working as a team both on and off the field. For example, my soccer teams always developed and ran a number of fundraisers throughout the year, requiring us to set and achieve goals together. I know how much effort it takes and how satisfying it is to achieve a group goal.

Why LinkedIn Is Good for Networking and Job Hunting

Why LinkedIn Is Good for Networking and Job Hunting Why LinkedIn Is Good for Networking and Job Hunting LinkedIn is the largest professional networking site available today used by those on the low end of the business totem pole all the up to CEOs of international conglomerates. LinkedIn provides a way to connect with other professionals and will help you stay in contact with millions of users. LinkedIn is strictly used for exchanging knowledge, ideas, and employment opportunities and has increasingly become a leading tool for helping individuals expand their networks as well as a way to find jobs in their field. What Should Be on My LinkedIn Profile? LinkedIn is a professional way to promote your personal brand online. LinkedIn is usually one of the first websites to show up in search engine results and is, therefore, a great tool to establish your online presence and connect with professionals.   Think of LinkedIn as a more dynamic and visual version of your resume. You can include traditional professional information, such as your education, expected graduation date, work experience, college awards, clubs, and hobbies. But rather than just listing this information, LinkedIn allows you to expand on each point. You can share projects you are particularly proud of, such as a PowerPoint restoration presentation that you did for your architectural design class or a brochure you designed for the non-profit where you volunteer.   You can also include a headshot though it should not be a selfie or other kind of casual image. You want to present yourself as polished, professional and you should dress the way you would for a job interview.   One of the best features of LinkedIn is the ability to include references and recommendations. If you have past professors or managers who appreciated your work, you can request that they submit a recommendation, which will show up on your profile for prospective employers to see. If you do this, be sure to have each reference say something different about your skills and work ethic.   LinkedIn Groups LinkedIn also has thousands of groups related to virtually every industry and niche you could think of. You can find like-minded professionals in your area who participate in these groups. They often discuss the latest trends in the business, post advice, and share job postings. Joining and getting involved with these groups is a great way to expand your professional network.   Job Hunting with LinkedIn LinkedIn has a powerful job listing section as well. Unlike other sites, listing a job on LinkedIn requires a fee, but that does eliminate the scam jobs so its worth it. LinkedIn also makes it easy to research the company youre interested in, other staff members, and the job description youre applying for is usually described in-depth. You can even connect online with the hiring manager to discuss the role via LinkedIns InMail service (although the site only allows for five free InMail messages- after that, you need to purchase a premium version which costs $30 a month.   While LinkedIn can be  essential  for  students looking for an internship, or a first job, remember that LinkedIn is for professionals and you must maintain a professional presence in all of your interactions, posts, and photos- this is not Twitter where people often vent their frustrations or discuss their political views. When used thoughtfully, LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for your job search.   The Pulse Articles Section LinkedIn also has something called The Pulse, a section where people can post articles. Many of these are from industry leaders, but budding professionals can also post content. Articles often include tips on how to manage productivity and news about industry trends and changing business models. Engaging with authors and posting your own content is a useful way to build your network and get your name recognized in the industry.

Airlines Executive Receives a Resume Makeover

Airlines Executive Receives a Resume Makeover Airlines Executive Receives a Resume Makeover Formatting clean-ups make an operations expert’s resume as incredible as his accomplishments. Before he found Ladders, Sam’s resume was grounded in an illegible fog and a lack of personality or focus. Here are some of the suggestions I made when upgrading Sam’s resume:Keep your options open and your resume focused. When I asked about a target, he said he wanted to keep his career options open. Sam felt that because of the economy he should look outside of his industry, as well as inside it, for a position that could use his wide range of ‘transferable skills.’Clients are under the misconception that the broader they appear on their resume, the more interested all kinds of employers will be in them. The reality is that your resume needs to be focused to get attention. You need to be offering exactly what an employer is looking for.Do what you love. Eventually during our discussion, Sam revealed he’d been interested in airlines and flying for as long as he could remember, even as a small child. He knew lots of history and fine details about airlines all over the world, and was willing to relocate anywhere on the planet to stay in the industry. Working for airlines was the only career path he’d ever wanted. As a long-time resume writer, I know that when someone has had an all-their-life interest in something and they don’t really want to move away from it yet â€" especially if that industry still has plenty of jobs, and even more if the client has great experience in that field â€" the best thing for the client is to stay with that which they love. I pointed this out to Sam, and he seemed somewhat relieved at it being okay to stay focused on what he loved. With that information, we drafted Sam’s new resume to clearly position him as the airlines operations expert that he is.Avoid putting your title in a ‘header.’ Sam’s name was fading off into the sunset on his old resume. He had created the header of his resume with Microsoft Word’s ‘Headers Footers’ feature which embedded the information into a separate part of the document so that the same information would print at the top of each page.An embedded header on subsequent pages is a good idea, but you want to stand out loud and clear on the first page. His format only showed up in a soft, diminished grey viewed online. Also, subsequent page headers don’t need to contain all of the same information as the first page header. Your name, phone and email contact information is sufficient.Make a good impression with a strong opening. Many undervalue the importance of the ‘title’ on your resume. Sam’s old resume lacked a proper opening/offering/title statement, which basically challenged the (extremely busy) employer to figure out what he’s looking at. We made his new resume user-friendly from the top down so an employer can quickly see what he was offering and determine his potential value to her company.Showcase your wins, not your duties. Keep in mind that a good resume is not a life-long, detailed, career biography. I distilled and displayed the critical parts of Sam’s employment history in a highlights section, and then fortified it with bulleted accomplishments. One common mistake that turns powerful resume information into mush is too many bullets. The eye is drawn to bullets in a document, making them a very powerful visual tool. I bulleted the accomplishments in Sam’s resume, separating them from his everyday tasks so they stood out. It’s not important to have a lot of everyday task details in a resume, especially if you have great accomplishments, which Sam does. Those are the keys to a good resume. A nicely written, well laid-out resume that reflects what you have to offer â€" and respects the employer’s time and interests â€" will go a long way toward making a spectacular first impression. Employers appreciate that you took the time to ensure you were giving them the best possible document. Sam deserved a powerful resume that could land him the interviews he wants. You deserve the same!

Capture Your Personal Brand in One Sentence

Capture Your Personal Brand in One Sentence Capture Your Personal Brand in One Sentence Describe your value, then convince others.Your personal brand is the keystone to communicating your value during a job-search campaign. Once you have a clear statement to describe your value to an employer, you can start convincing others to believe it.Gain a competitive advantage by honing a personal brand statement. Include it in your resume ; revise it to create an attention-getting, 30-second elevator pitch ; expand upon it through career success stories in an interview and communicate it frequently to others at networking events. The following examples use the same personal branding statement, which was developed for a manufacturing executive.I employ cutting-edge technologies to speed manufacturing so companies can grow revenues, cut costs and increase profits. How best can you use this simple statement of value? While you don’t want to repeat it word for word, you can improve your perceived market value by weaving this message into every phase of the job search.1. Incorporate it into your executive summary With only 20 to 60 seconds to catch a recruiter’s or hiring manager’s attention, you can draw them into your resume and set the tone in your header and executive summary: Example:SENIOR MANUFACTURING EXECUTIVESenior executive with broad-based expertise steering multimillion-dollar, global manufacturing companies. Strategic thinker able to identify new technologies that make manufacturing more efficient and revenues stronger, improving profit margins. Creative leader with proven strengths in PL management, product innovation and turnaround operations.2. Add power to your elevator pitch As you network, you’ll need a brief, memorable elevator pitch that sells your value, not just your experience. Before: “Hi, my name is Carl Brown, and I am an executive with 15-plus years’ experience with global manufacturing companies.” After: “Hi, my name is Carl Brown. I’m an experienced manufacturing executive who deploys new technologies for global companies seeking efficiency and revenue growth. Some of the top companies I have worked with include ABC Plastics, Newform Manufacturing and TechNec Corporation.”3. Make an impression in interviews Understanding the core of your personal brand will help you answer critical interview questions with authority.Question: “So Carl, tell me about yourself.”Possible answer: “OK. As you’ve seen from my resume, I’ve got more than 15 years’ experience in PL management, product innovation and turnaround management for global manufacturing companies in the plastics industry. Throughout my career, I have employed innovative technologies to manufacture products more efficiently. That’s helped my employers achieve aggressive business goals.”Once you can articulate your unique value to your next employer, you can leverage that personal-branding message in creative new ways.

Four phrases that make you sound less confident

Four phrases that make you sound less confident Four phrases that make you sound less confident Not everyone is born a charming extrovert … and that’s a good thing. If everyone was the same, life would be boring. And especially in the workplace, it’s mainly when you have a variety of different personalities â€" including the quieter and introverted personalities â€" that workdays are more colorful and interesting. However, introversion at work and having trouble outwardly communicating your thoughts and feelings in a healthy way can cause challenges in your career, because that typically means it’s hard to confidently perform in front of colleagues and supervisors â€" and it also causes unnecessary awkwardness!Whether or not you would call yourself an introvert, here are a few specific phrases to stop saying â€" and even rid from your vocabulary completely â€" if you want to sound and feel more confident at work:Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!1. “I just want ed … ”People who express themselves vaguely and passively appear insecure. That leads us to tip #1: If you want to appear more confident, say goodbye to passive wording. Instead of using phrases like “I just wanted to … ”, try “I’m planning on … ” or “My suggestion is … ” to express your goals and ideas. You will notice, by using a binding language you will not only sound more determined, confident and competent in the moment to your colleagues and supervisors, but you’ll also start to believe it to be true.2. “Could you maybe … ”Many of us throw in the seemingly harmless word “maybe” without even noticing in our everyday work talk. For example, to ask a colleague for a favor or to assign a task. Of course, it’s important to ask politely if you want someone to do something for you, but adding “maybe” to what otherwise should be a pretty straightforward request, makes it seem as if you’re almost expecting to get a “no” answer. Or, it wo uld at least give the receiver of your message the notion that you don’t have high hopes that they’d say “yes”. We, therefore recommend using phrases like “Can you help me with this project?” without the word “maybe”. This doesn’t necessarily take away the person’s option to say no, but what it does is prevent any unnecessary confusion about your expectations.3. “I could do that … ”Friendliness and reliability are important requirements for teamwork and that means that you absolutely should lend a helping hand to colleagues every so often when you find it’s needed. However, that doesn’t mean you have to be the one to help every time someone needs it, and neither does it mean that you should never say “no” to a coworker who asks for help. This probably feels difficult to do if you’re a naturally generous and helpful person, but you must set and enforce your own boundaries and “guard your own time” in order to stay sane and successful at work you rself. If you know that you’re swamped and can’t spare time away from an important deadline or project, be upfront to both your colleagues and superiors. Offering help to others while secretly wishing you didn’t have to, or even being quietly resentful about it, is NOT the way to go. You can respond to a request in a friendly but clear way: “I would love to help but unfortunately, I have no time.Ӊ€œI could do that … ” is also the wrong phrase if you really DO want to help out or do whatever task it is that needs to get done. In this case, communicating clearly about your intentions helps others understand that you are glad to take on the task and aren’t only doing it out of helpfulness.4. Filler words like “actually” or “perhaps”Filler words such as “actually” or “perhaps” have become more and more common in conversation these days. And while there’s no problem with having those words in your vocabulary in general, you should be very careful about t he way you throw them into sentences, especially in the workplace; “actually” and “perhaps” have the potential to detract from what you’re trying to say or even weaken your argument or conviction because they tend to not add much value. The same is true of the following expressions: possibly, practically, possibly, possibly, and basically â€" they all have the tendency to make you sound less confident. This  article  was originally published on  Kununu.com.

How to Showcase Your Education as Experience in Your Resume - Resumonk Blog

How to Showcase Your Education as Experience in Your Resume - Resumonk Blog How to Showcase Your Education as Experience in Your Resume No experience is a wasted experience. If you’re starting a new career or switching into one, you might think that you don’t have any relevant experience to include in your resumewell think again! Even if you don’t have any professional experience in the new field you’re looking to enter, you can always frame your education to showcase your skills. Many projects students work on during college or certificate programs resemble real-world problems and can be used to show your potential employer how you could add value to their company. Here are a few questions that can help you brainstorm: What projects did you work on? Is there any project that’s relevant for the field you’re looking to enter? Maybe a project that is similar to a task that you would be doing during the job you’re applying for? If there aren’t any, you can make up one yourself! Imagine a problem that a company might have and create a case study for how you would solve it. What did you learn from the project? Did you gain any new skills? Did it reveal anything about your strengths? Did you improve your proficiency in any programs you used while working on it? What did you accomplish? What was the goal you set for yourself at the beginning of the project? Did you reach it? It could be making a profit, winning a competition, getting a good grade, or just improving a soft/technical skill. Once you’ve found the right projects you would like to include in your resume, list them under the Education section of your resume as Relevant Coursework. Here are a few examples of what they might look like: “Company Website Project”, General Assembly Created a fully-interactive website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Paid high attention to the visual layout and made sure that the site was responsive and accessible. Worked in a team of five and helped allocate responsibilities in order to work in the most efficient way. “Song Restructuring”, The Music School Processed a given song using a new and different concept. Rearranging the rhythm, structure, and harmony to fit the new style. Used Sibelius to communicate music scores clearly. “Spring Advertising Campaign”, Creative Advertising School Outlined a multi-platform advertising campaign strategy for a retail client with a fixed 3-month budget. Used Photoshop and InDesign to create print advertisements and banner ads in different dimensions. Sketched and presented a storyboard for a 30-second television spot. Additionally, if you have any tangible outcomes of a project - such as a website, design, or photos - attach them to your resume to share with your potential employer. Adding additional context to your resume can show employers that you have the skills necessary to get the job done, and help you stand out from other applicants.

From the President July 2015

From the President July 2015 From the President July 2015 A Passion for Engineering I am honored to write this letter as the 134th president of ASME. Each president brings a certain focus, passion and energy to our organization and I look forward to working with the Board of Governors, senior volunteers and the staff leadership to continue that tradition. I believe there are two things that make us all human, first that we can love, and secondly, we can create. Engineering is connected to one of those two things - the ability to create. I love engineering with a passion, and I want to work together with you through our association with ASME to inspire the millions of students and engineers worldwide to feel as passionate as I do about life and about our profession.   As a 6-year old I fell in love with engineering after seeing Neil Armstrong become the first human to walk on the moon. When I was a 12-year old visiting a shipyard in Peru, I learned how a 30,000-ton ship can float, and after visiting hydroelectric plants in the Andes with my father, I began to learn how they operated. These and other experiences not only helped shaped my passion but helped me understand the importance of mentors and experiences in shaping a passion for engineering. Over the past three years, we have begun an important journey to prepare the Society to meet the needs we will face in the 21st century. It began with Pathway 2025, which galvanized our focus on having a global impact, developing the engineering workforce, and addressing the energy issues of our planet. As I addressed the delegates at the 2015 Annual Meeting, last month, in Jacksonville, Fla., I shared some of my ambitions as president. During my tenure I would like to see us focus on engineering our own transformation - to give our organization a crisp articulation of what is possible and the path that will bring it to life. We know that it will be a significant yet exciting journey to become the kind of driving force for innovation and networking that we all know that ASME is and can be around the world. Everything we have accomplished as a Society has prepared us for this time in our history. I believe we are ready to explore the kind of transformation that successful organizations undertake to build a foundation for our growth for future decades and beyond. That being said, the presidency of ASME must never be about the person who is in that position - it is, however, about us serving our organization and inspiring all of us to fulfill its mission. During the next year, I would like very much to meet and talk with as many of you as possible about how we will work together to achieve our mission to serve our global communities and to apply engineering knowledge to improve the quality of life and to communicate the excitement of engineering. Together, we can set our sights on a brighter future for ASME.  For well over a hundred years, ASME has been the place for mechanical engineers to grow and develop - developing codes and standards, doing research, networking, collaborating and bringing their ideas both to our community and to life - making a difference in our world. Our transformation must prepare our organization to inspire more students and early career engineers to join our community. They need inspiring reasons to join us.   This year, we will focus on developing our capability to build and execute more global strategies so that we can have a greater impact on the engineering community. I invite you to join me and our Society in the passion of engineering so we can reach our goals. Let's be passionate about our work and find fulfillment in our profession so that we can make our world a better place. Julio C. Guerrero ASME President
